Kay graduated with a Degree in Fashion and Textiles and later trained as a Milliner at Huddersfield College.

Since 1991, she has been a Freelance Designer and Maker, working in Theatre, Film and Television for Companies including the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Ken Russell, the BBC and Midlands Arts Centre. 

Kay also undertakes Private Commissions for Hats and makes Period Reproduction Costumes for Museums.
